The Invention of Paper

Today, I am going to talk about one of the most important inventions in history: paper. We use paper every day for school, books, notes, and important documents, but most people do not think about where it came from or how much it changed the world.

Paper is usually credited to a Chinese government official named Cai Lun. Around 105 CE, he developed a better way to make paper using tree bark, old rags, hemp, and fishing nets. Even though paper-like materials existed before then, Cai Lun's method made paper cheaper, easier to make, and available to more people.

Before paper was invented, In ancient China, people wrote on bamboo strips, wooden tablets, and silk. Bamboo and wood were very heavy and hard to carry. Silk was much lighter, but it was expensive and only rich people could afford it. As governments grew and more records needed to be kept, these materials became difficult to use. People needed a cheaper and easier way to write and store information.

Cai Lun's invention helped solve these problems. Paper was lightweight, affordable, and easy to transport. It made it much easier for governments to keep records and organize information. It also allowed ideas and messages to be shared with more people.

Paper had a huge impact on communication. Before paper, sharing information was slow and difficult. After paper became available, people could write down ideas, copy information, and share it with others more easily. This helped messages travel farther and allowed important information to be saved for future generations. People could communicate across longer distances and keep important records for many years.

Paper also had a major impact on education. Books became cheaper to make, which meant more people could learn to read and write. As paper spread from China to other parts of the world, it helped schools, libraries, science, and literature grow. Many historians believe that knowledge would have spread much more slowly without paper.

Paper also changed society in many ways. It made reading and writing available to more people instead of just the wealthy. It helped governments keep records, businesses organize information, and communities share ideas. Most importantly, paper helped preserve history because important events, stories, and discoveries could be written down and saved for future generations.

In addition, paper helped spread culture around the world. People could record their beliefs, traditions, and knowledge and pass them on to future generations. Without paper, many historical documents, books, and stories might have been lost forever. Paper gave people a way to save important information and learn from the past.

However, paper has not had only positive effects. Making large amounts of paper requires trees and other natural resources, which can lead to deforestation and pollution. Paper can also be used to spread false information because written materials can be shared with many people very quickly.

In conclusion, paper was invented to solve the problem of expensive and difficult writing materials. Thanks to Cai Lun, paper made communication easier, helped spread education and knowledge, and changed society forever. It allowed people to preserve history, share ideas, and learn from one another. More than 1,900 years later, paper is still one of the most important inventions ever created and continues to play an important role in our daily lives.

The Progressive Era

 American Conservative and Anti War

Before I looked at the websites, I never heard of American Conservative or Anti War. I think it's interesting how both websites have their own strong opinions about war and U.S. foreign policy. I usually get my information from news sources that are popular, or social media, so that's why I have never came across websites like these.

The American Conservative talks about politics, foreign affairs, and culture. It mainly focuses on ideas such as having less government control, protecting families and communities, and protecting people's rights. The website believes that the United States should be careful about getting involved in other countries and wars.

The Anti War website focuses on war, the military, and U.S. foreign policy. It has a strong antiwar point of view and questions whether the United States should become involved with foreign conflicts. It provides news, opinions, and information about wars. The difference between the two websites is American Conservative talks about political and cultural issues, while the Anti War focuses on opposing war. Its purpose is around questioning U.S. involvement in war and conflicts.

I realized how I don't hear about war from news sources, so these websites gave me information and perspectives that I don't see very often. I got my information about wars from my history classes throughout the years. It's very different in ways because my history teachers were in a classroom teaching me all about wars, but on a website it's different because you don't have anyone teaching you the information, you physically have to read through a website.

The information from the websites seem very trustworthy and reliable. However, I would still want to compare the information with other sources before deciding what I really believe. I always to check every website before actually believing the information. Checking other sources can see if the facts are accurate, hear a different side of the issue, noticing if any crucial information was left out. It helps me see different sides and form my opinion on the topic. Overall, while searching through the websites I learned a lot of new information.

Privacy Online and Off

This week's class and videos made me think differently about privacy and the amount of information being collected about us every day. Before this lesson, I knew companies and websites collected data, but I did not realize how much information can be gathered from things we do every day, such as driving, using social media, shopping online, or simply carrying our phones.

One topic that stood out to me was automatic license plate readers. These cameras can track where vehicles travel and

create records of people's movements. What surprised me most was the idea that information can be collected about people who have not committed any crimes. The videos showed how location data can create a detailed picture of someone's daily life.

These issues affect me because I use technology constantly. My phone, online accounts, social media, and internet searches all create data that can be collected and stored. I never really thought about how all of those small pieces of information could be combined into what the class called a digital dossier, which is a detailed profile built from many different data points.

My friends and family are affected in the same way. Most people use smartphones, shop online, stream videos, and communicate through apps every day. The class discussion showed that companies can collect information about what we search for, what we buy, where we go, and what we post online. Even smart devices in our homes can collect information about us.

Another point that caught my attention was how information can be shared with third parties. Once we give information to a company, we may lose control over where that information goes. It can be shared, sold, or passed along to other organizations. That is concerning because most people probably do not know how many companies may have access to their information.

I think the government should continue allowing surveillance tools that help solve crimes, but there should be limits and oversight. Information about innocent people should not be stored forever. One idea mentioned in the video was requiring police departments to delete information that is not connected to criminal activity while still allowing legitimate law-enforcement uses.

The government should also make sure surveillance technology is not abused. The class discussed examples where powerful tools were potentially misused, which shows why accountability is important. Clear rules can help protect both public safety and individual privacy.

There are also things we can do to protect ourselves from invasions of privacy. One of the biggest lessons from class was to be more careful about the personal information we share. Phone numbers, email addresses, home addresses, and social media posts may seem harmless, but they all have value.

Good tech habits can also make a difference. Reviewing privacy settings, deleting cookies and browsing history, and being careful about which websites and apps we trust can help reduce some types of tracking. We should also think

carefully before giving out personal information unless it is truly necessary.

Another important lesson was to think before posting online. The videos explained that our digital footprints can last for a long time. Pictures, comments, and posts can be copied, shared, screenshotted, and reposted even after they are deleted. Something that seems harmless today could affect how others view us years later.

As a college student, that part really stood out to me. Future employers often search for applicants online, and what they find can influence their opinions. This is why it is important to create a professional online presence and be careful about what we share with the public.

My biggest takeaway from this week's materials is that personal information has value. Technology has made it easier than ever for governments, companies, and advertisers to collect information about people. While data collection can make services and advertising more efficient, it also creates serious privacy concerns. Because of that, we need both responsible laws and smart personal choices to protect our privacy in the digital world.

Eight Values of Free Expression

 Individual Self-Fulfillment

If I had to pick a Eight Values of Free Expression I would choose Individual Fulfillment. It's a speech that helps people express who they really are. It is being able to express your thoughts, beliefs, interests, and personality to help you figure out who you are. Mainly, it can help you find other people who share your interests.

Expressing yourself can really help you find your true friends and people. It allows people to show who they truly are, share their thoughts and feelings, and connect with others who really understand them. You are able to grow as an individual because sharing your ideas can help you learn from others and allow you to become more confident.

Free Speech helps people develop their identity. For example, it gives them the right to express their thoughts, opinions, and interests and beliefs. When people are open to share their thoughts, they learn more about what they care about and what is crucial to them. Without the freedom of expressing yourself, it would be harder to show people who you are. People find their best friends who have similar interests as them. When you share with someone what you like or care about, the other person might have the same interests as you, meaning they are able to connect with you. This helps people form friendships.

Expressing myself has really helped me as an individual. I have grown in expressing my thoughts to others. I used to have selective mutism, where I would never speak to anyone. I would always hide my feelings and thoughts, so my friends would never know how I was feeling. I always had a harder time making friends because I would never open up about my interests, which impacted making connections with people. As I grew over the years as a person, I have improved socially. I am now able to get out of my comfort zone by expressing myself to others and opening up. I have been able to be myself and show my personality to others and what came out of that is I have found some of my people at college, which I am very grateful for. If I didn't use Individual Fulfillment I would have never found some of my two favorite people in the world.

This value is crucial to me because it is such an important quality in life that everyone needs to use. Expressing your beliefs, interests, and personality to others allows you to make connections. In my opinion, Individual Fulfillment is so important because everyone gets to have a voice and feel comfortable being themselves. People shouldn't have to hide their opinions, personality, or interests because they're afraid of what other people might think, which is exactly how I was. Expressing yourself can help you become more comfortable with who you are and create relationships with others. My experience has shown me that finding your voice can take time, but once you become comfortable with talking to others, it can open doors to new friendships. This is why Individual Self Fulfillment is the value of Free Expression that describes me the best.

The U.S. Supreme Court

Before watching this documentary, I thought of the Supreme Court as simply the highest court in the United States. After learning more about its history and how it operates, I realized it plays a much larger role in shaping the country.

The documentary described the Supreme Court as the most powerful judicial body on Earth. Its job is to interpret the Constitution, protect individual freedoms, and decide major legal questions that can affect millions of people.

One of the biggest things I learned is that the Court's power depends on trust.

The Constitution gives the Court its authority, but the public has to believe that the justices are independent and fair. Without that trust, the Court's decisions would not have the same influence.

I was surprised to learn that the Supreme Court was not always as powerful as it is today. Chief Justice John Marshall helped strengthen the Court and establish its place as an equal branch of government. His connection to Marbury v. Madison was especially important because that case gave the Court the power to strike down laws that violate the Constitution.

The documentary also examined some of the Court's mistakes. The Dred Scott decision was one of the most significant examples. The Court ruled that Black people could not be citizens and that Congress could not ban slavery. The video described this ruling as a major self-inflicted wound that damaged the Court's reputation.

Another important topic was the 14th Amendment. I learned that it guarantees due process and equal protection under the law, and some people even refer to it as a "Second Bill of Rights" because of the protections it provides.

The film also explained how cases reach the Court. Every year, thousands of petitions are submitted, but only about one hundred cases are selected for review. After hearing oral arguments, the justices meet privately, vote, and write opinions that guide lower courts.

In the end, the documentary's main message was clear. The Supreme Court's power comes not only from the Constitution but also from the trust it has earned from the American people over generations. That trust remains one of the Court's most important responsibilities.

Top Five Sources of News and Information

                                              My Top 5 News Sources

   CNN
In high school, specifically History class of Junior year, Every single week, I would watch videos on CNN10 constantly learning what's currently going on in our world. I always found it so interesting on all the different topics it had to say in one video. We would fill out this Google Document writing down everything we learned on one or two of the topics. This made me as a grow as an individual because as I kept watching them every week I would be able to comprehend the information better every week.

Friends and Family

Friends and family is a great source of news. Whenever,  I don't understand what's going on, my parents and friends inform me. They break it down in a way that I can comprehend it. They are reliable and trustworthy because they already know the person sharing the information, which makes the message feel believable compared to a stranger or social media. You can also ask questions, share opinions, and talk about the news together.

 Google

Whenever I have to do research for school. Google is the place I would go. It gives you the answer and information immediately, you rarely have to go search for it. If I hear a word from one of my friends and don't understand what it means, I go to Google to look up the term, and right away I can understand what my friends were saying. This helps me grow and become more intelligent as a person as I consume in information from the internet. Other social media platforms might not be the most reliable, but Google makes me feel more confident on the information that I am comprehending.

                                                      TikTok

I am consistently finding new information on TikTok. It's the easiest way for me to access information to find out what is going on in today's world. TikTok is the app I spend the most time on throughout my day to found out information. It's easy for me to comprehend information easier then any other source or website. TikTok is presented in a simple way that is engaging, so I can be invested and informed based on what's going on.

Instagram

I love finding my information on Instagram, whether it's people's stories, reels, or posts. I go through Instagram everyday, making me find interesting updates and news. It could be through mutual friends, or scrolling through my feed. I am always learning new aspects and information from my  Instagram.
